Our History
New Horizons Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sumter County carries forward a legacy that began right here in Sumter County, Georgia—the birthplace of the Habitat for Humanity movement.
Inspired by the vision of Millard and Linda Fuller and the pioneering work at Koinonia Farm, Habitat for Humanity International was founded in Americus, Georgia, in 1976 with a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.
For decades, New Horizons Habitat for Humanity has partnered with families, volunteers, churches, businesses, and community organizations to transform lives through affordable housing. Through new home construction, home preservation, neighborhood revitalization, and affordable mortgage programs, we have helped families achieve stability, self-reliance, and the dream of homeownership.
Today, we continue to honor our heritage while embracing the future. Guided by our mission and strengthened by community partnerships, we work every day to expand housing opportunities, strengthen neighborhoods, and improve the quality of life for families throughout Greater Sumter County and surrounding communities.
